Trajan vs Gill Sans

Trajan is a serif font, whereas Gill Sans is, as hinted by the name, a sans serif. The tail on the Q of Trajan is very long and swoops off to the right. Gill Sans' Q has a short tail that does not extend past the bowl. A major defining difference between the two fonts is that Trajan's upper case and lower case letters are identical, except for the X and Cap Heights. Gill Sans has a marked difference between upper and lower case letters, each are shaped difference. Gill Sans has a very distinctive lowercase g, with the two bowls separated quite a bit, and a straight ear that comes from the center and stubs out to the right. Gill Sans is a more practical font than Trajan, although there are certainly more practical fonts than Gill Sans. Trajan is made for headers or titles, it is often used(or overused) as a movie poster and promotional art font.

Bookman vs Helvetica.

Helvetica is san serif, and therefore lacks the serifs that Bookman has. Bookman is a bit wider horizontally tan Helvetica. The G in Helvetica has one bowl whereas the G in Bookman has the more traditional two bowls. The Q's tail in Helvetica is a straight slanted line that crosses right through the bowl. In Bookman, the Q's tail comes right from the outer line of the bowl, moving downward before curving to the right. The dots above the i and j in Helvetica are sqaure, whereas they are round in Bookman.

Okay, so now it's time for some school-required blogging! Joy! I'm going to be comparing two fonts, and this won't be the last time I do this so... enjoy or something.

In one corner we have Bauer Bodoni, and in the other, Palatino. Now Bauer Bodoni has a notable weight difference between parts of the letters. For example, the lower case "f" has a very thick stem, and a thin arm. Also, Bauer Bodoni is characterized by very straight thin serifs, and a couple ball serifs on the j and f. Palatino is not as quickly recognizable as Bauer Bodoni, although it may be more practical to use for large bodies of text. The weight in the line variation varies more, going from thin to thick in one curve or line, whereas Bauer Bodoni stuck with one weight per curve for the most part. This makes Palatino a more complex, although subtly so, type. The serifs of Palatino vary. For instance, the i, j, and b, have serifs that slope downwards, while v, w, and y have straight horizontal serifs.

So I started this blog at the beginning of the semester, so I suppose almost two months ago. As you can see, it's fairly empty at this point. I suspect my teacher wanted me to be updating it, but you know... other homework, work, life in general happens. But here I am, writing it now.

I may even keep updating this blog after the semester's out. Everyone needs a blog nowadays, don't they? Everyone's every single opinion, thought, or interest must at all costs be posted online for the world to read. Who knows, the world may be better for it.

But anyways, let the blogging begin.
